Our Top Things to Do In The South Hams

Eats
Food is our passion and if you share this love of all things sea caught, farm reared, home grown and foraged then you have found paradise as this area is a food lover's heaven. There are some fantastic places to eat out locally from the humble fish and chip pub to the amazing Oyster Shack restaurant which offers superb fresh seafood and daily specials.

Fine dining in a historic setting at the Tower Inn in nearby Slapton, gourmet French inspired cuisine at the Millbrook in Southpool, or organic food picked fresh from the farm each day at the award-winning Riverford Farm field kitchen - you won't find a better selection of fresh local food anywhere. For picnics there is a good farm shop one mile from us.

Walks
The coastal path can easily be accessed from Swallows' Flight and offers dramatic views of the coastline and Start Point Lighthouse.

Walks to secluded beaches such as Lannacombe, Soar Mill Cove and Hallsands are a lovely way of spending a day. For those who like a goal at the end of their walk, one of the prettiest strolls is from Totnes along the Dart valley to Sharpham vineyard.

For the more serious walker, Dartmoor offers footpaths encompassing ancient granite tors and vast expanses of wild moorland hills. There are lovely pubs and cream tea stops all over our county and plenty of footpaths in between!

Boats
Devon is a paradise for those who like messing around in boats. For a low key start to boating, we are happy to lend out our family sized kayaks so that you can paddle around the sheltered estuaries and look at wildlife. For those who like a little more action, there is a local surf school and stand up paddle boarding teaching centre.

On Saturday mornings our own gang of children can normally be found cadet sailing in Salcombe, and there are lots of places in

Salcombe and Dartmouth where day boats can be hired for a Swallows and Amazons style adventure…if this all sounds a little strenuous then there are great ferries with trips to national trust properties and beaches locally.

Places
Agatha Christie's Greenway House and gardens are well worth a visit - her beautiful house can be accessed by a tiny ferry boat from Dittisham, and another lovely National Trust house to visit is the art deco Coleton Fishacre.

We also love Dartington Hall near Totnes for historic gardens and regular literary festivals and live performances.

The newly  restored Royal William Yard in Plymouth is a grade one listed merchant naval dockyard now housing trendy restaurants such as Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall's River Cottage and other lovely eateries and shops.

Cornwall is also accessible for a long day trip - we often visit fishing ports such as Padstow and Fowey combining them with the Eden Project which takes around an hour and a half to reach by car.

Kids
Our five acres of land has gardens, a play area, and fields in which to let your children roam. Our own four kids are free range and like nothing better than building dens, lighting marshmallow toasting fires and games on the lawn.

Paddling, sandcastle and water play on the beach whether sandy or pebbly is another favourite past time as is crabbing with lines and a bit of bait from the quays. Devon offers so much for free in terms of kids amusement that you rarely feel the pressure to spend money on organised entertainment.

For wet days, there is an outstanding aquarium in Plymouth and a great zoo in Paignton, as well as Devon's forested answer to a theme park with rides and thrills for all ages - Woodlands.

We have plenty of kids toys and baby equipment onsite and are happy to lend you what you need to make your holiday run smoothly.
